Beyond

Respekt

Over more than thirty years, writer Carmilla Floyd and photographer Joseph Rodríguez have returned to photograph and interview individuals and their families as they have become adults, partners, and parents. Most are girls and women trying to build different lives for themselves and their children.

The cholitas and cholos running the streets in the early 1990s are now middle-aged — some are even grandparents. Some eventually found stability. Others have faced prison, homelessness, mental health struggles, or died too young.

In later years, the project has become more of a joint effort between the writer, the photographer and the people portrayed, as they contribute memories and reflections on past and present.

Here, we will present material that will later be published in a book and audio series. More material will be added over time. The imagery is a mix of Rodríguez’s pictures from 1994 to 2025, and personal snapshots and facsimiles.
